Abstract
The comparative performance of elite wheat breeding lines is a prerequisite for identifying a high yielding line. An experiment was conducted in Dhodial and Besian, in the District of Manshera, Pakistan, during 1997-98, to determine the relative performance of the wheat genotypes 2-1, 4-1, 5-1, Ghaznavi, 13-1, 13-D, 9-1 and Fakher Hind. The commercial cultivars Bakhtawar-92 and Inqilab-91 served as controls. Data were recorded on days to 50% heading, number of tillers per plant, days to maturity, plant height, spike length, number of grains per spike and grain yield. The genotypes were significantly different for all the traits except for the number of tillers per plant, spike length and grains per spike. The significant difference showed that each genotype gave a distinct response from the other genotypes in the 2 locations. The genotypic correlations of days to 50% heading with tillers per plant, plant height, and spike length were not significant while those with days to maturity, grain per spike and grain yield were significant at 1 and 5% levels of probability. Such significant differences can facilitate us to select and improve a desirable genotype(s). Ghaznavi and Fakher Hind. performed better for yield and other traits compared to the controls
