Abstract
To find more quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for plant height in wheat and apply them in the varietal improvement and marker-assisted breeding, a population of 104 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the cross of Wangshuibai (a Jiangsu landrace) and Alondra (Mexico variety) was used to detected the QTLs for plant height. The individuals of the population and their parents were assessed in the field trials at two locations in 1997, 1999 and 2002 in Jiangsu, China. With the methods of interval mapping and MQM mapping, four putative QTLs for plant height were detected on chromosomes 1D, 2B, 4A and 4D, respectively. The QTL on chromosome 1D came from Wangshuibai, and the other QTLs from Alondra. Each QTL was able to explain phenotypic variations by 10.3-33.8% and decrease the plant height from 3.2-7.4 cm. In each environment, the total putative QTLs explained approximately 35.0-44.5% of the total phenotypic variation. The QTLs on chromosomes 4A and 4D were detected in the three years and should be useful in future marker-assisted selection programmes. The QTL on chromosome 4D was probably a dwarf gene Rht-Dlb
