Research Interest
I work in cereal foliar pathology, principally wheat, also barley and oats doing much of my work in conjunction with breeders. The diseases we work with in wheat are septoria nodorum blotch (Phaeosphaeria nodorum), septoria tritici blotch (Mycosphaerella graminicola), yellow spot or tan spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis) and leaf rust (Puccinia recondita). In barley its net blotch (spot and net forms of Pyrenophora teres), scald (Rhyncosporium secalis), powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis) and for oats it is principally stem and leaf rusts and septoria avenae blotch (Phaeosphaeria avenae f.sp avenae). Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) interests are across wheat, barley and oats. We are examining the inheritance of resistance to septoria nodorum blotch in diploid wheat (Triticum tauschii) with a view to the possible exploitation of marker assisted selection methods in the future. We are also interested in marker assisted selection of disease resistance traits in barley.
