Planting began in mid-April into relatively dry soil in most Minnesota locations. Moisture levels improved considerably by the end of April and by the end of July had replaced the deficit carried from the last half of 2003. Temperatures were normal at planting, but for most of the growing season was quite cool, so much so that crown rust infection was reduced in spite of at least adequate levels of moisture. Crop development was also delayed creating the longest gap (as much as 120 days) between planting and harvesting in at least 40 years. Harvesting of commercial fields started about July 20 and plot harvest on campus (St. Paul) did not begin until the end of the first week in August.
