Abstract
The tolerance of 26 winter wheat genotypes, one triticale cultivar (Plai) and one rye cultivar (Gloria) to aluminium ion toxicity was investigated under laboratory, greenhouse and field conditions in Romania during 1989-92, on 2 soil types: (i) brown luvic soil for testing of both yielding and tillering ability, resistance to diseases and growth rhythm at low temperatures, and (2) albic luvisoil for testing of both tolerance to aluminium ion toxicity and adaptability to acid soils. Nutritive solutions with 4 and 8 ppm Al SUP 3+ were prepared. The control cultivars used were Albota (for yielding ability) and Atlas 66 (for tolerance to aluminium ion toxicity). None of the genotypes with genetical tolerance similar to that of Atlas was found. From the Romanian germplasm, only F 472 M3-1 showed an increased tolerance level, but was inferior to Atlas 66. Among the Romanian cultivars, a better tolerance level but significantly inferior to Atlas 66 was recorded in Albota, selected under natural conditions of podsol
