Abstract
The chromosomal location of genes governing resistance to race 77-5 (121 R 63-1) of the leaf rust pathogen (Puccinia triticina, syn. P. recondita f.sp. tritici) was studied using trisomics (13III + 1III) of durum wheat cultivar MACS 9 and a resistant cultivar HD 4502. Durum wheat cv. MACS 9 showed susceptibility, whereas HD 4502 showed high resistance to the pathogen. F1 plants showed susceptibility to the pathogen. F2 seedlings from the cross MACS 9 x HD 4502 segregated into 1 resistant:3 susceptible, indicating that resistance in HD 4502 against pathotype 77-5 is under monogenic recessive gene control. The F2 ratios in crosses with all trisomics, except trisomic 2B, also fitted the 1 resistant:3 susceptible ratio. Of the 37 seedlings from the cross of trisomic 2B with HD 4502, 3 seedlings showed susceptible reaction and its F2 deviated from the expected 1 resistant:3 susceptible ratio. It is expected that F2 involving critical cross combination will give distorted segregation because of the extra chromosome
