Abstract
Considerable information is available on the inheritance of leaf pubescence in polyploid wheats, but we know very little about this trait in diploid wheat We investigated the inheritance of leaf pubescence in diploid wheat in crosses of Triticum monococcum ssp monococcum and T monococcum ssp boeoticum All the accessions of ssp monococcum examined had glabrous leaves, and all the accessions of ssp boeoticum examined had pubescent leaves. The fertile F1 hybrids between these two taxa had pubescent leaves, indicating that leaf pubescence in diploid wheat is a dominant trait. The F2, BC1F2, and F3 data showed that leaf pubescence was controlled by one dominant gene. The mean number of hairs on the second, third, and penultimate leaves differed significantly, with maximum pubescence on the penultimate leaf. The number of hairs on the upper surface of the leaves was significantly greater than on the lower surface for all three leaf positions.
