Abstract
A comparative analysis between EST or genetic sequences of maize from NCBI was conducted. The genetic sequences corresponded to 224 of SSR and RFLP markers covering the whole maize genome with an average distance of 10 cm, and sequences searched from rice genome database. By BLASTn, 16 939 sequences from the rice genome database were homologous to sequences of maize molecular markers at PN<1e-5 (on average, one of the maize sequences corresponded to 75.6 fragment sequences in the database). At PN<1e-10, approximately 7853 sequences from the database corresponded with the maize sequences. Compared to the rice physical map, a total of 279 sequences was shown to have their relative locations. Comparing with the rice molecular linkage map, 896 hits out of 2729 sequences were shown to have their relative locations. Based on a comparative map developed between rice and maize at the sequence level, 11 of 18 markers closely linked to 10 quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapped for plant height in maize corresponded to chromosome regions of QTLs or genes related to rice plant height. This indicated that the QTLs controlling rice and maize plant height were considerably homologous, although the synetic group could be smaller than expected
