About 90% of the Colorado State University (CSU) barley genetic stocks, collected by the late Dr. D.W. Robertson and the late Dr. T. Tsuchiya, that were previously stored at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, and at the USDA-ARS National Seed Storage Laboratory (NSSL), Fort Collins, CO, were transferred to the USDA-ARS National Small Grains Germplasm Research Facility (NSGGRF) at Aberdeen, ID in 1994. The barley genetic stocks were transferred to the NSGGRF in an ARS suburban by An Hang and Darrell Wesenberg on May 18-20 and September 12-14. Dr. Nora L.V. Lapitan, CSU, Fort Collins, CO; Dr. S. Wang, CSU, Fort Collins, CO; Dr. Loren E. Wiesner, USDA-ARS NSSL, Fort Collins, CO; Dr. Steve A. Eberhart, USDA-ARS NSSL, Fort Collins, CO; and Dr. Lee E. Sommers, CSU, Fort Collins, CO, played key roles in the maintenance and evaluation of the CSU barley genetic stocks in recent years. Dr. Wiesner and Dr. Lapitan provided excellent cooperation in all phases of the relocation effort.
The barley genetics stocks are being held in cold storage at the NSGGRF and are identified utilizing the original classification system at CSU, including the barley genetic stock (BGS) numbers, the B stock numbers, and the T stock numbers. A preliminary summary list of these barley genetic stocks is available upon request to the senior author.
Certain barley genetic stocks are currently being grown in the NSGGRF greenhouse and others are scheduled for planting in the field at Aberdeen in the spring of 1995. Most of the harvested seed will be held in the NSGGRF, but a representative small sample of each newly grown barley genetic stock will be forwarded to the NSSL for long term storage.
Barley aneuploids in this stock include: a complete set of primary trisomic, eleven telocentric trisomics (triplo 1S, triplo 1L, triplo 2S, triplo 2L, triplo 3S, triplo 3L, triplo 4L, triplo 5S, triplo 5L, triplo 6S, and triplo 7S), six acrocentric trisomic (acro 1L^1S^, acro 3L^3S^, acro 4L^4S^, acro 5S^5L^, acro 6S^6L^, and acro 7S^7L^), and a partial set of primary trisomics of wild barley (Hordeum vulgare subsp. spontaneum). Some aneuploid stocks in cultivated barley have been increased and seeds are available upon request to the senior author.
We have also received two complete sets of primary trisomic seeds of the cultivars Betzes and Steptoe, and seeds from the world collection of desynaptic mutants (Table 1) from Dr. R.T. Ramage, USDA-ARS, ret., Tucson, AZ.
